Xylitol Can Be Deadly To Your Dog.... The popular artificial sweetener, Xylitol, can be deadly to your dog or ferret. Xylitol is also used as an anit-cavity agent and can be commonly found in chewing gum, breath mints, mouthwash, candies, toothpaste, tooth whiteners, and chewable vitamins. According to a bulletin issued by the Food and Drug Administration, on February 18, 2011, the accidental consumption of Xylitol by a dog can cause a sudden and life-threatening drop in blood sugar (hypoglycemia), seizures and liver failure. Here are a few of the more popular brands that contain Xylitol: IceBreakers, Orbit, Trident, Xylimax, TicTacs, Zylishield, Nicorette gum, Crest Whitestrips, Jell-O Sugar Free Pudding. It is advised that you check all labels before bringing products into your pets environment.
